Gretel and Groot

We have our very own heroes this week with the wonderful Groot giving a lifesaving blood transfusion to another Crown pet, the lovely Gretel.

Gretel is an 8 year old cocker spaniel and initially showed signs of being lethargic and really not her usual bouncy self. Her gums were very pale and a blood test showed she had low red blood cells and a low PCV (packed cell volume). This basically meant that there wasn’t enough red blood cells going around to keep her healthy. Red blood cells carry oxygen so it was no wonder she was so tired.

She was subsequently diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder and received a blood transfusion and was put on extensive medication, both of which helped her condition improve. Unfortunately, sometimes, medical management of cases can take time while the treatment takes effect and despite an initial improvement, Gretel deteriorated and it was clear that she needed another transfusion.

As she had already had a blood transfusion it was essential that the second donor was an exact match to Gretels blood type. Enter Groot !!!!!...

Groot is a young, fit, healthy labrador and he was an exact match. His laid back temperament made him an ideal candidate for blood donation and he was an absolute angel while we took his blood.
